Positive Rinforcement Dog Training : How It Works

Positive reinforcement is reward your dog with food, praise, toys, or attention after he showed behavior that was intended. When teaching a new behavior, food is often used because it is quick and effective. Thus, increasing the success of the training is more easily obtained. It is easier to use and safer than punishing him.
As mentioned, food is positively reinforcing and therefore is a valuable training tool. To properly use food, the trainer must establish the behaviour to the point that the dog understands what behaviour it must perform on its own in order to earn reinforcement, and then, the trainer must quickly begin weaning away the food as discussed above. Because food is so successful in getting behaviour, many trainers become too dependent on it and do not reduce and eliminate it soon enough. Thus, dogs can learn to only respond when food is present.

Reward your dog for good behavior sounds simple enough. But to learn effective techniques, you need to follow some basic guidelines.

Timing 

The right timing is essential when using positive reinforcement. the prize should be given immediately after the act, in a matter of seconds, or your dog may not associate with the appropriate action. For example if your dog has to sit up but you gave him an award after him back on his feet, he would think she was given the gift for standing up. Using a clicker to mark the correct behavior can improve your accuracy and also help your dog understand the relationship between the right behavior and the treat.

Keep it short

Dogs do not understand the sentence. Keep use the short and uncomplicated command. The most commonly used command is "sit", "stay", "down", "come", "heel", and "leave it".

Consistency

Everyone in the family should use the same command, if not, your dog will be confused. Make a list of commands then place it in easily visible location by other families so they can see then memorize it.

Consistent could also mean always give rewards for each correct behavior dah never give reward when the behavior is not as expected.
